Roaming day pass or a travel eSIM: how to choose

sim.do Team|October 21, 20267 min read

A roaming day pass and a travel eSIM solve different problems. A pass extends your existing line. Talk and texts stay on your carrier bill, with the data that pass includes. A sim.do eSIM adds data only. It is a separate prepaid plan with no phone number, no voice, and no SMS. The better fit depends on the trip.

US postpaid passes from T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T are one case. A prepaid data eSIM is another. EU and EEA roam like at home is a third case, and it still skips the UK, Switzerland and Turkey. The dollar figures below come from those carrier pages, checked on 21 October 2026. They are not sim.do prices.

Three different ways to get online

Day pass

Extends your existing line. Talk, texts and data stay on that bill, inside the pass list.

Travel eSIM

Adds prepaid data only. No contract, no phone number, no voice and no SMS.

EU roam like at home

Uses your EU or EEA contract. The UK, Switzerland and Turkey sit outside the rule.

What a day pass extends

A day pass extends the line you already pay for. The carrier keeps the number, and talk, texts and pass data are billed on that account. You do not get a second phone number. If the trip leaves the pass country list, the pass does not cover the missing country. Treat a connection or a port as its own stop on that list.

T-Mobile International Pass

On the T-Mobile International Pass page, checked on 21 October 2026, the published passes are 1 day with 2 GB for $10, 10 days with 15 GB for $50, and 30 days with 30 GB for $75. The page lists 215+ destinations. A qualifying plan is required. The page says hotspot use of the pass data is allowed. One pass can be active at a time. Use those bundle prices as published. A country outside the 215+ destinations is not covered.

Verizon TravelPass

On the Verizon TravelPass page, checked on 21 October 2026, the fee is $12 a day in 210+ destinations and $6 a day in Canada and Mexico. Talk and text are included. High-speed data is 5 GB, then speeds are slower. Some Unlimited plans already include Canada and Mexico, so check your own plan before you add a $6 day. Multiply the fee by the days you will actually use the phone. Seven days at $12 is 7 times $12, which is $84. Canada and Mexico use $6 in that same count.

AT&T International Day Pass

On the AT&T International Day Pass page, checked on 21 October 2026, land use is $12 a day in 210+ destinations. An added line on the same day is $6. Cruise use is a different offer at $20 a day, with a smaller high-speed allowance. Keep land and cruise as separate prices. Multiply $12 by the land days you will actually use the phone, add $6 for each added line on that day, and price each cruise day at $20.

Prices change, and the carrier page wins

These dollar figures are for those US postpaid products. They were taken from the T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T pages on 21 October 2026. They are not sim.do prices. If a carrier page shows a different fee, allowance or country list, the carrier page wins.

What a sim.do eSIM adds

A sim.do plan is prepaid data with no contract, no phone number, no voice and no SMS. It does not extend your carrier line. Calls and texts stay on the home line. If you need your usual number, keep that line and decide whether data stays on it. The dual SIM with eSIM guide shows how to run both lines. If the phone cannot keep the home line, the pass is what extends the line you already use.

Compare the pass bill with a prepaid plan

Use the same countries and the days you will actually use the phone. You then have two bills for two products. Verizon includes talk and text with TravelPass. A sim.do plan is data only.

  1. List every country. A country off the pass list is not covered by that pass.
  2. Multiply a Verizon or AT&T land fee by the days you will actually use the phone. For T-Mobile, use the published bundle of $10, $50 or $75.
  3. Keep an AT&T cruise day at $20, separate from the $12 land day and from the $6 added line.
  4. Read the prepaid price on the sim.do page for those countries. Country plans are on the countries page.
  5. Keep the home line when calls and SMS must use your usual number, then choose where the data sits.

Size maps, chat and a hotspot with how much data for a trip. The T-Mobile page allows hotspot use of the pass data. Read Verizon and AT&T for their own tethering rules.

EU roam like at home

Roam like at home is the European Commission rule for periodic travel on a mobile contract you already hold. It covers the 27 EU countries, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. Since 1 January 2026 it also covers Ukraine and Moldova. The Commission publishes the policy on its roaming page, checked on 21 October 2026.

The UK, Switzerland and Turkey sit outside that rule. London, Geneva and Istanbul leave it even when the rest of the trip is inside the EU. A contract can still add one of those countries, separate from the Commission map. If you roam in another covered country more than you use the phone at home over 4 months, the operator may apply a surcharge. Any data cap belongs in your contract. Roam like at home is not a US day pass and not a sim.do price. Which prepaid lists name Switzerland, the UK and Turkey is in Europe eSIM countries.

A UK contract is the source

This article does not state a UK carrier price. A UK contract may include some EU destinations, and it may leave them out. The contract is the source, including for Switzerland and Turkey. A US pass price does not transfer onto a UK bill. Where a country is left out, keep the home line for calls and SMS and compare a prepaid plan for that gap.

Questions before you choose

Do a day pass and a travel eSIM do the same job?

No. They solve different problems. A pass extends your existing line. A sim.do eSIM adds data only, with no phone number, no voice and no SMS.

How do I compare a day pass bill with a sim.do plan?

Multiply the daily fee by the days you will actually use the phone. For T-Mobile, use the published bundle instead of a split day rate. Compare that total with the prepaid plan for the same countries. A country off the pass list is not covered.

Does roam like at home include the UK, Switzerland and Turkey?

No. It covers the 27 EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and since 1 January 2026 also Ukraine and Moldova. The UK, Switzerland and Turkey stay outside it. A contract may still add one of them.

Can I keep my usual number if I buy a sim.do eSIM?

The eSIM has no number. Keep the home line for calls and SMS, and put data on the eSIM when the phone can run both. Setup is in the dual SIM with eSIM guide.

Are the T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T prices sim.do prices?

No. They are US postpaid prices from the carrier pages on 21 October 2026. A sim.do plan is prepaid data with no number. AT&T land at $12 a day and cruise at $20 a day stay separate.
